Abstract: This study analyzes interview data with Japanese-American learners of Japanese language in Hawaii today for the purpose of exploring their identity constructions. In this study, the speaker's personal view, stance, and self-display during interaction are considered indicators of his or her identity. In any form of interaction, one's interlocutor has some effect on one's identity construction. In a speech setting such as an interview, the peculiar interactional nature of the encounter may have a rather strong influence on identity construction processes. In the data examined in this study, we find that during the interaction, the interviewer (a native speaker of Japanese) proposes, negotiates, and at times selects an identity for the interviewees (the learners). It is important for researchers to be aware of these interactional effects in seeking "facts" about the learners. This study explores the possible outcomes for learners' identity construction processes through talk.
