Abstract: Japanese people showed interest in Chinese literature, which has been around for about 3,000 years in recorded history, at an early stage. They complied and published many books on the history of Chinese literature between the late 19th century and early 21st century. The compilation of Chinese literary history in Japan, however, did not happen as a result of imitating the compilation custom in China or being motivated by China. Japan started the compilation process in its original manner long before China did, and China eventually looked to the Japanese compilation works as a model. Given this fact, this paper discusses how the Japanese people in the Meiji period approached Chinese literary history when describing it, how familiar they were especially with the type of Chinese literature written in colloquial language, and how their approach and knowledge influenced the way they complied and described the Chinese literary history. A list of texts on Chinese literary history compiled in Japan can be found at the end of the paper.
